### India Reports Monkeypox Case: Man Arrives from an Outbreak Country

On Sunday, the Indian Ministry of Health announced that the country is investigating a suspected case of monkeypox in a man who recently traveled to a country experiencing an outbreak of the virus. The patient is currently in isolation at a hospital, and his condition is reported to be stable.

#### Diagnostic Tests Underway

While the ministry has not specified the strain of the virus the patient is infected with, tests are being conducted to confirm the diagnosis. The statement from the ministry added that “the case is being managed according to existing protocols, and efforts are underway to trace contacts to identify potential sources and assess the impact within the country.”

The Hindu newspaper reported last month that India has been on high alert due to an outbreak of a new strain of monkeypox in Africa.

#### Public Health Emergency

This development follows the World Health Organization’s declaration of monkeypox as a global public health emergency after the emergence of the new strain. India has previously reported 30 cases of an older strain, known as Subtype 2, between 2022 and March 2024.

#### Symptoms and Transmission

Monkeypox typically spreads through close contact. The disease usually presents with mild symptoms and rarely results in fatalities. Common symptoms include flu-like signs and the appearance of pustules on the body.
