**IAEA Chief: Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear Ambitions are Fully Justified**
In a special interview with Al Arabiya, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that Saudi Arabia’s ambitions in nuclear energy are entirely legitimate.
Grossi expressed no doubt about Saudi Arabia’s adherence to international safeguards and its close cooperation with the agency. He highlighted that Saudi Arabia has the right to benefit from clean energy sources. Grossi also noted that “the peaceful use of nuclear energy is a clear path to a carbon-free future alongside the gradual transition to clean energy concepts,” which he is discussing with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman during climate change negotiations.
**First Nuclear Power Plant**
It is noteworthy that Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman has revealed that Saudi Arabia is working on a project to build its first nuclear power plant.
The Kingdom also supported the IAEA’s “Hope Rays” initiative, launched in 2022, with a contribution of $2.5 million to help save lives and combat the burden of cancer through nuclear technology.
Grossi also congratulated the agency on the imminent opening of the Nuclear Security Training Center in Seibersdorf, scheduled for October this year. Saudi Arabia initiated and financially supported the idea of establishing this center, in collaboration with other countries.
