**Traffic Accidents and the Recklessness Resulting From Them**
Traffic accidents are among the most debated and frightening issues today, claiming numerous lives. However, one of the most overlooked yet highly dangerous topics is traffic accidents, which occur due to ignorance, negligence, carelessness, and particularly among young people. It is an issue that demands discussion about its causes, risks, and how to prevent it, as well as raising awareness about its dangers, which we will address in this article.
Traffic accidents certainly occur due to vehicles colliding with each other, crashing into structures or objects, or hitting pedestrians. From this, we can say that the victims of traffic accidents are numerous, and the consequences are severe, ranging from material and emotional damages to the loss of innocent lives.
Global studies and statistics on traffic accidents indicate that the death toll exceeds 1.38 million people annually. In Palestine, the latest statistics on traffic accidents in 2019 show an increase in incidents, with a rise of 2.6% compared to the previous year, 2018, and a total of 12,829 accidents. This represents an increase of 9.3% compared to the average of the previous three years.
**Causes of Traffic Accidents:**
1. **Speeding:** Speed is one of the primary and most significant causes of traffic accidents. The faster the speed exceeds the legal limit, the greater the obstacles and risks. Additionally, distance plays a clear role in traffic accidents; the closer the distance between vehicles and structures, the higher the likelihood of accidents, while longer distances reduce the probability.
2. **Lack of Focus:** Distractions while driving, such as being preoccupied with music or a phone, are factors that significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
3. **Neglected Vehicle Maintenance:** Failing to regularly service vehicles and not ensuring that all systems are fully operational can lead to a higher chance of accidents.
4. **Driving Under the Influence:** Driving while impaired (under the influence of drugs or alcohol) greatly increases the risk of traffic accidents.
All these causes stem from the absence of strict laws, the weakness of traffic regulations, and inadequate monitoring and enforcement by the relevant authorities responsible for traffic law enforcement. Thus, we can say that the law, due to its negligence, contributes to the increased rate of traffic accidents.
Legally, the driver (i.e., the perpetrator) is responsible for injuries and traffic accidents and is liable to compensate the affected parties for the resulting damages. The insurance company, if the vehicle is insured, may also bear this responsibility.
According to Article 2 (a) of the Vehicle Insurance Law, every vehicle owner must have mandatory insurance for their vehicle, meaning that the insurance company can cover the damages and provide compensation, and the perpetrator can sue the insurance company.
**How to Avoid Traffic Accidents:**
1. **Avoid Speeding:** Never speed while driving, as it reduces focus. Always maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
2. **Limit Distractions:** Minimize phone use as much as possible, and avoid distractions such as music or beverages that reduce focus.
3. **Stay Vigilant:** Pay close attention while driving, follow safety guidelines, observe emergency protocols, and heed traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
4. **Regular Vehicle Maintenance:** Continuously service and inspect vehicles to ensure they are in good working condition.
Finally, dear drivers, you must be aware that adhering to safety laws and avoiding traffic accidents not only ensures your safety but also the safety of many lives. Understand that your violations and disregard for laws due to carelessness undoubtedly result in numerous casualties and damages, whether material or emotional. Moreover, by neglecting your responsibilities, you bear the guilt for lives lost, injuries sustained, and damages incurred. For your own sake and the sake of others, comply with the law and avoid violations.
