### Who is Fouad Shukr Targeted by Israel in Beirut Suburb Bombing?
According to Washington, “Shukr serves on Hezbollah’s highest military body, the Jihad Council,” and played a “pivotal role” in the bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut on October 23, 1983.
Israel launched an airstrike on the southern suburb of Beirut on Tuesday. The Israeli military stated on Tuesday that it targeted “the leader responsible for the Majdal Shams attack” in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
Journalistic sources mentioned that “the targeted leader in the Beirut suburb is on par with Imad Mughniyeh,” while rumors suggested he is Fouad Shukr, the military advisor to Hassan Nasrallah and “the director of Hezbollah’s missile precision project.”
Fouad Shukr is Hezbollah’s top military commander in the south and is listed on the U.S. sanctions list. He has been working with Hezbollah for over 30 years. Washington had previously offered a reward of up to $5 million for information on Fouad Shukr, also known as Haj Mohsen.
Shukr is a senior military advisor to Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah. According to Washington, “Shukr serves on Hezbollah’s highest military body, the ‘Jihad Council,’ and assisted Hezbollah fighters and Syrian regime forces in Hezbollah’s military campaign against Syrian opposition forces in Syria.”
Shukr was “a close associate of the late Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh,” according to Washington. He played a “pivotal role” in the bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut on October 23, 1983, which resulted in the deaths of 241 U.S. military personnel and injuries to 128 others.
On September 10, 2019, the U.S. State Department designated Shukr as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224, as amended. Earlier, on July 21, 2015, the U.S. Treasury Department designated Shukr under Executive Order 13582 for acting for or on behalf of Hezbollah.
