### Russia Controls 200 Square Kilometers of Ukrainian Territory in One Month
A “Agence France-Presse” analysis showed that since the beginning of 2024, Russian forces have controlled a total of 1246 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine.
Russia has controlled about 200 square kilometers of territory in eastern Ukraine during the month of July, most of it in the Donetsk region. This marks an increase in their field gains compared to the previous month, according to an analysis conducted by “Agence France-Presse” based on data from the American Institute for the Study of War.
However, this advance remains twice as less as the progress made by Russian forces last May when they controlled 449 square kilometers (an average of 14.5 square kilometers per day) at the beginning of the new Russian offensive that extended into the Kharkiv region and has since stalled. This was the largest monthly advance recorded by Russian forces since March 2022 after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
Since the beginning of 2024, Russian forces have controlled a total of 1246 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine, which is more than the areas they controlled throughout 2023 (584 square kilometers).
However, this represents only 0.2% of Ukraine’s territory that Russia controlled in 2014 when pro-Moscow separatists began fighting in eastern Ukraine for independence.
In detail, Russian forces controlled 198 square kilometers in Ukraine between July 1 and July 30, including 155 square kilometers in the Donetsk region alone (east), where Russian forces are advancing towards the cities of Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Chasiv Yar, aiming to later attack Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, until July 30, 2024, Russia has controlled 65776 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.
Thus, 18% of Ukrainian territory is now under the control of Russian forces, which also annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and controlled areas in the east before the war.
“Agence France-Presse” based its figures on data published daily by the American Institute for the Study of War, which relies on public information released by both camps, as well as satellite image analysis.
