### India: Death Toll from Landslides in Kerala Rises to 36
Indian media have reported that at least 36 people have died following several landslides in a mountainous region of Kerala, southern India, on Tuesday. Heavy rains and poor internet connectivity are hampering rescue efforts.
Minister George stated, “So far, 24 bodies have been transported to various hospitals, and many others have sustained injuries.” She added that both regional and central authorities have launched extensive search and rescue operations, with Indian Navy personnel being dispatched to the landslide sites to assist in the rescue efforts.
An “Indian Express” report suggested that hundreds may be trapped, with up to 19 individuals, including a child, feared dead. Television footage showed water cascading over rocks and fallen trees, with several homes collapsing.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall in the state today, according to Reuters. The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office announced that relief efforts are ongoing, with two helicopters from the Indian Air Force deployed.
Mohsen Shahdi, a senior official with the National Disaster Response Force, noted that rescue operations are being hindered by internet outages in the area.
