Typhoon “Yagi” Kills Two and Injures Dozens in China with Winds of 230 km/h
The typhoon caused heavy rainfall and strong winds exceeding 230 km/h, prompting the evacuation of approximately 460,000 people.
The powerful typhoon “Yagi” left at least two dead and 92 injured on the tourist island of Hainan in southern China, according to the official Xinhua News Agency on Saturday.
The typhoon brought heavy rainfall and strong winds exceeding 230 km/h, leading to the evacuation of around 460,000 people, according to the state television channel CCTV.
In the neighboring province of Guangdong (southern China), authorities reported on Friday that more than 574,000 residents were evacuated to safe areas.
Additionally, the airport in Haikou, the capital of Hainan in the island’s north, canceled all inbound and outbound flights on Saturday until 3:00 PM local time, as reported by CCTV.
Southern China typically experiences typhoons during the summer and autumn seasons, which form in the warm oceans east of the Philippines before moving westward.
However, due to climate change, predicting tropical storms has become more challenging, while their intensity has increased, resulting in heavier rains and stronger winds that cause floods and coastal damage, according to experts.
Typhoon “Yagi” is now heading towards Vietnam after passing through southern China, with expectations that it will strike northern and north-central regions around Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on Saturday.
